The in-scale shot: your cheapest photo

Shoppers judge size from product photos. An in-scale image answers that question quickly, builds confidence and reduces size-related returns.

One useful product photo is still surprisingly rare: the in-scale shot, showing the product next to something a buyer instantly understands the size of.

Baymard Institute's product-page research finds that 42% of users judge a product's size and fit from images, while roughly a quarter of ecommerce sites omit an in-scale view. Give buyers that visual reference and they can choose with more confidence.

What an in-scale shot shows

It pairs the measurement with a reference your customer already has in their head:

  • A mug held in a hand.
  • A rug in a room, with a sofa for scale.
  • A necklace worn on a neck.
  • A "fits in your pocket" gadget shown in a pocket.

Why it pays for itself

One good in-scale shot helps a buyer judge size before ordering. That improves confidence on the page and reduces the shipping and restocking tied to size-related returns.

It is a simple addition with a direct commercial payoff. Take it.
